Magnificent is the first word come to mind when we saw this fabulous French work 18k gold chimera brooch, which dated back to the Art Nouveau era. We have sold some wonderful chimera brooches, but it is the first time we found one with a colored gemstone so it is a truly unique “one-of-a-kind” piece piece, and nobody else can have anything like it.

The whole brooch is crafted with the extreme attention to the details, from the lively feathers on the diamond wings, twisted tail with scales, to the little tongue out of his mouth: he is crushing the fire which is made of a red tourmaline cabochon! The heart of the chimera is made of a rose cut diamond, it has an estimated weight of 0.15 ct. The gold is worked in different textures on different part to imitate the lively body of the creature. When looking at it, we’ve the impression that the chimera is jumping out of the brooch! The brooch has double hallmarks for 18K gold.

When the brooch is worn, it provides a substantial presence without being overwhelming. Powerful, rare and beautiful, this chimera is a true rare piece to add into your antique jewelry collection!

Toward the close of the 19th century French jewelers created a golden bestiary of fantastic creatures and mythical animals. Chimera is probably one of those most mysterious creatures we can have in the antique jewelry: The Khimaira (Chimera) was a fire-breathing creature with the body & head of a lion and a serpent for a tail.
