Here we have a wonderfully carved antique shell cameo brooch. The brooch depicts the side profile of Bacchante in relief and is of an excellent quality. It sits in an etrscan style brooch mount which also has lovely detail.
Bacchante was a female follower of Bacchus (aka Dionysus), the god of wine and fertility. Her hair is symbolically adorned with grapes and grape leaves.
This large cameo sits in a fitted antique box.
